Carla Betanzo was part of the folkloric ballet of Universidad de Chile during her undergraduate studies. Current as an active member of the Altiplanic communities and advocate for culture and development, participate on the Cultural Carnaval parades, at the Tirana’s Fiesta, which is a very important sincretic event in Chile and the northern regions.

Carla is Veterinarian Doctor by profession attending to the University of Chile. And later Master in Development Practices at the University of Queensland, Australia and a diploma in Indigenous rights, Interculturality and Autonomy in University Alberto Hurtado, Chile. During her studies she got connected to the peasants family farming inspiring her to understand the role of professionals to provide the technical capacities for aid the local goals, but considering also local resources and assets, understanding the need of rural populations and inequity condition for access to opportunities and tools for sustainable development.

After studying and living in Santiago de Chile and Brisbane in Australia, moved to work to Colchane in the Altiplanic highlands of Tarapacá chilean region, place where could got close to Aymara’s communities near the bolivian border, compromising with the food autonomy and care of natural environment.

Currently she lives in Iquique as a technical advisor and performing environmental studies in diferent lands of the northern chilean region, advocating for promote the ancestral knowledge and practices to work the land and keeping soils alive, that the aymaras have kept for centuries.

As an direct action, Carla is part of a team of three women, professionals that have share work field at the region, to create Qalaphurk’a group, to advocate for food autonomy, people’s sovereignty  and their territories, in addition with alternative economy practices and been kind with the ecosystem. Starting with a project called La Canasta Local (The Local Basket) offering organic food in cities, shortening the steps and increasing the profit for the farmers, same way offering the consumers a fair and more convenient price.
