Chilean Expedition
The Chilean Expedition takes students on a journey through Chile–from the magnificent expanse of the Mars-like Atacama desert to the glacial fields and ancient forests of Patagonia, and the metropolitan cities of Santiago and Valparaiso to the small villages of indigenous peoples and coastal fishing towns.
Climate Change Advocacy
Climate Change has become an issue of profound concern in Chile: melting glaciers, devastating floods, landslides, wildfires due to drought conditions, giant “red tide” of algae blooms fueled by unusually warm sea temperatures, and ocean acidification. Conflicts over water rights between big agricultural businesses, small farmers, the mining industry, and indigenous peoples have increased. “Chileans now regard Climate Change as their greatest external threat,” says Marcelo Mena, Chile’s former Environment Minister.
Participants will learn the relevant aspects of climate change and then witness the effects in the diverse regions of Chile. They will meet the people living with the consequences of climate change, those addressing technical issues and solutions, and with administrators setting policy.
The goal of the program is to enable participants to experience and study the complex and interrelated issues of climate change and choose an advocacy format that suits their discipline.
ASU students and non-ASU students
The Climate Change Advocacy program, created in 2017 by The Future School, collaborates with Chilean scholars, NGOs, rural community leaders, professionals, and public service members. These individuals are agents of change or leaders from diverse fields, studying, fighting or enacting the effects of climate change.
The summer program is offered through Appalachian State University (ASU) – Office of International Education and Development and the Department of Applied Design, led by Prof. Brian Davies. All applicants must request for application access to the Faculty Leader at daviesbf [at] appstate.edu.
